The most important thing to understand about the branded Bernina Express is that the seat reservation is mandatory and separate from the fare or any rail pass. On a Milan day-trip package, the panoramic-seat reservation is bundled into the price along with the coach transfers to and from Tirano and the border logistics — which is much of the point. You book once and turn up to a guaranteed panoramic seat, rather than assembling tickets, reservations and transfers yourself across two countries. For a single day from Milan, that convenience is usually worth more than the modest saving of doing it piecemeal.
Branded train versus regional
The same scenic track is also served by ordinary regional trains — openable windows, no reservation, cheaper — which show you identical scenery in a more local, flexible way. The branded Bernina Express adds the glass panoramic roof, the reservation and the guaranteed seat. Milan packages use the branded train or a reserved panoramic seat; if you ever do the line independently and want to save, the regional trains are the well-kept secret, at the cost of the panoramic carriage.
Booking ahead in peak season
Reservations on the branded train sell out in peak summer, over the winter holidays and on clear-weekend runs, and the popular Milan packages fill up too. Book ahead for those periods rather than hoping for space on the day. And choose a flexible booking: because the views depend on the mountain weather, the ability to cancel or rebook is genuinely useful on a trip whose whole value is what you can see from the window.
